Federal agents have arrested 21-year-old National Air Guardsman Jack Teixeira for leaking highly classified US documents. Officially, he was charged with unauthorized retention and transmission of national defense information and willful retention of classified documents in connection with the alleged leaking of highly classified information on the war in Ukraine.
Teixeira was a low-ranked reservist who worked at the NORAD wing of Joint Base Cape Cod. His role was to essentially be a tech guy. The role he had gave him access to a top-level security clearance. Teixeira had full access to JWICS, a secure intranet system utilized by the United States Department of Defense. JWICS houses top-secret and highly secure information.
Teixeira did not hack into anything nor did he access anything without information. The problem is that he accessed documents and then posted them to his online community through an app called “Discord”. He was known as “OG” to this community and many other young men followed him. Some members of this group saw “OG” as a father figure.
A perk of the group was that Teixeira would post classified documents to the server that members could see. Everyone was sworn to secrecy, but obviously, at least one person refused to obey that oath and they began to leak screenshots of the discord server to other parts of the internet. These screenshots quickly spread and, of course, Federal Agents were able to zero in on his location to arrest him
Teixeira faces at least 15 years in federal prison. This case may also be transferred to the Military Justice System, which is a separate entity from anything on the State or Federal level.
