Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act into law, which will ban so-called “assault weapons”. The reason for this law is to prevent legally-obtained weapons from falling into the hands of bad actors and criminals. A recent mass shooting in Illinois that was carried out with a legal weapon was cited here. The ban will most likely affect all “semi-automatic” weapons, or maybe just “AR-15s” which were mentioned by name. The law also places limits on the capacity of magazines. Current gun owners who possess any of the newly-restricted guns are now required to register them with local authorities. Several County Sheriffs have signaled that they will refuse to enforce the law after it goes into effect.
