Jim Jordan has failed to become Speaker of the House after the first round of voting after a whopping 20 Republicans voted against him. All Democrats voted for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Some of the detractors voted for Steve Scalise, some voted for the ousted Kevin McCarthy, and some voted for other random people like Lee Zeldin. Tom Emmer even got one vote. It was truly an odd thing to witness. Soon after the voting ended, the House went into recess. It is not clear when they will return or when voting will resume. Kevin McCarthy needed 15 rounds of voting before he was confirmed, only to be ousted as Speaker just nine months later by a group of 8 Republicans.
