Jussie Smollett Released From Jail After Serving Less Than One Week

Jussie Smollett has been released from a Cook County jail after serving less than one week of his 150-day sentence. A judge sentenced the Hollywood actor for his role in the hate crime hoax he committed along with two others back in January of 2019. Along with the 5-month jail sentence came a court fine of $25,000 and restitution of $120,000. Smollett may still serve his original sentence and pay the ordered money, but that won’t happen until after the appeals process is finished. The logic behind Smollett’s release is that an appeal may take longer than his actual sentence, so releasing him in the meantime makes more sense. Smollett was, however, required to pony up a $150,000 bond in order to be granted release from jail during the appeal.
