Conservative radio host and author Larry Elder leads all candidates vying to replace Gavin Newsom in the upcoming recall election. A pool of 1,000 potential voters was asked who they would vote for and Elder led the pack at 16%. The poll has a margin of error of +/-2.9%. Caitlyn Jenner, who was probably seen as the front-runner at one point, came in a distant 4% which is tied for third place. The majority (around 52%) remain undecided. Attempting to become Governor in California as a conservative will be an uphill battle regardless of how positive poll numbers look. And Larry Elder was very close to not even being included on the ballot at all.
An unofficial list of candidates was published online without Larry Elder included. This prompted a swift reaction from the many thousands of fans of Elder crying foul. He has spoken about running for Governor for a while now, so the news of him being excluded was very serious. Elder took to social media with a short video explaining that the early list was not certified and that everything should be fine. His next step was to get involved with the court system so he could get on the ballot. The official reason he was initially left off the ballot was “incomplete tax returns”. This reasoning was thrown out in a swift fashion by a judge who ruled that the rule requiring five years of recent tax returns does not apply to recall elections.
The recall election took quite a bit of groundwork to get going. Then, of course, there were efforts to delegitimize the process from Newsome and his allies. Through all of the ups and downs, the recall election effort has survived and the election will take place in September of 2021. There will be two simple questions on the ballot. The first is “should Gavin Newsom be recalled?” The second is “who should replace him?” If more than 50% of the respondents answer “yes” to the first question, then whichever replacement candidate gets the most votes will become the next Governor.
