NBA basketball player Ryan Rollins was caught shoplifting body wash, candles, and other small household items at Target on several occasions in the Washington, DC, area. He is currently not on an NBA team after being released by the Washington Wizards, but he was on the Wizards’s roster at the time of the alleged incidents. He may face jail time for petit larceny, but such a sentence is unlikely considering the circumstances. He will most likely plead guilty and pay a fine.
Rollins was on the Golden State Warriors roster for about a year before his time in Washington. In California, the crimes he allegedly committed would not be prosecuted. It is expected to see videos of people stuffing large trash bags full of items in retail stores such as Walgreens and then simply walking away. Security guards do nothing but watch the madness play out. These items are routinely sold on the street in public vending stations not far from where they were stolen. In the San Francisco Bay Area and other parts of the Golden State, retail theft under $1,000 is not prosecuted. It is possible Ryan Rollins thought the laws were the same way in Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, but obviously, they are not.
