NHL Hockey Player Refuses To Wear Pride Jersey Over Religious Beliefs

NHL hockey player Ivan Provorov refused to wear the “Pride Night” jersey during warmups. Provorov plays for the Philadelphia Flyers and his team faced off against the Anaheim Ducks that night. “Pride Night” was the theme for the night to “celebrate” LGBTQ+ figures and accomplishments, presumably. The big screen above the ice featured the “pride” flag and also a Philadelphia Flyers logo filled with the same flag. Players were given warmup jerseys and also hockey sticks with “pride” colors taped on.

Ivan Provorov is originally from Russia and he practices the Russian Orthodox religion. “Pride Night” festivities are not something that his religion is congruent with, therefore he declined to participate. Flyers head coach John Tortorella backed Provorov up during a post-game press conference by saying that he is always “true to himself”. The Flyers organization released a statement saying they support the LGBTQ+ community but they also support an individual’s right to practice their religion as they see fit.
