NY Governor Kathy Hochul: Black Kids Don’t Know What Computers Are

In a viral clip on social media, New York Governor Kathy Hochul says that black kids in the Bronx do not know what a “computer” is. The excerpt comes from a Milken Institute Fireside Chat with MSNBC host Jonathan Capehart. They discussed advanced technology, artificial intelligence, and work in the future. Hochul stated that educating young people in ways that will prepare them for a highly technical future is essential. Many of today’s jobs will no longer be available, and high-tech positions will be in demand.

In a moment that the Governor now regrets, she spoke about black kids not knowing what a “computer” is. That statement was followed up by an emphasis on education for these kids so they can contribute to technology in a meaningful way. In a subsequent statement, Hochul says she misspoke and did not mean to offend; instead, she spoke about the lack of exposure to high technology.
