Dr. Anthony Fauci and Senator Dr. Rand Paul squared off over the issue of gain of function research at the Wuhan Lab in China. The heated exchange between the two political figures happened during a Senate hearing. The purpose of the hearing was to figure out whether the NIH (National Institute of Health) funded “gain of function” research at the Wuhan lab in China. Now that the source of the pandemic has been essentially narrowed down to a leak at said Wuhan lab, the next step is figuring out how and why this may have happened.
The NIH granted $3.7 million to an American company called EcoHealth Alliance. That company then distributed $600,000 of that grant money to the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). This is the lab that most likely leaked SARS-CoV-2 which is now known as COVID-19. When the pandemic first started one of the main theories is that the virus started in a “wet market” where unsanitary “street meat” was sold. This does not make much sense considering China is notorious for unsanitary and unsafe practices in areas of medicine. The lab leak theory (once banned by Facebook) has now become mainstream.
Anthony Fauci has consistently denied the link to the NIH to EcoHealth to WIV for the purposes of gain of function research. Although the entire purpose of the Wuhan lab is to conduct gain-of-function research. This type of research has the purpose of making viruses more potent and/or more transmissible. Taking an animal virus and altering it to become transmissible to humans is most certainly gain-of-function research according to what Fauci’s own colleagues wrote as the definition. And this is probably the reason why the World Health Organization initially claimed that the virus could not pass from human to human. Because before the gain of function research that made SARS CoV-2 human-to-human transmission possible, it was unheard of.
