A trailer for the upcoming movie “The American Society Of Magical Negroes” has just been dropped and has basically gone viral. The title of the movie is racially charged and the trailer most certainly displays racial elements. There is a Hollywood trope called “the magical negro” in which a black supporting character is cast to help a white character achieve a certain task or goal.
In this film, the lead character played by Justice Smith is assigned to a white character and given the task of improving his life. The trailer becomes strange when he develops a love interest for a white woman. He is then told that the relationship can’t go forward because his focus will not be on the white man he was tasked with assisting and, as a result, everyone’s “magic” will fail.
A two-minute trailer does not necessarily reveal the entire plot of the movie. The trailer has, however, revealed quite a bit about the direction of the film which appears to be an in-your-face racially charged and uncomfortable experience.
