Prince George’s County, Maryland is offering Universal Basic Income to a small group of young people and seniors. Beneficiaries of the program will get $800 per month with no strings attached. The money comes from a $4 million fund and it is set to last for two years. There is a process to apply for the funding. Applicants are required to make under $50,000 per year and proof of income is required with picture identification. Local leadership says that the response has been overwhelming. The purpose of the money is to help people aged 18-24 who have aged out of the system and also seniors who need help during this tough economy. Opponents of UBI state that this is yet another “entitlement” style program that does not truly help eradicate poverty.
