The 14th Taoiseach of Ireland (Prime Minister), Leo Varadkar, has abruptly resigned. There have been rumblings of changes within the internal structure of Ireland’s Government ahead of local and European elections, which are just seven weeks away. Varadkar’s resignation, however, was not expected and has taken much of Europe by surprise. Varadkar is the son of a migrant from India and the first openly LGBT Prime Minister in Ireland’s history. He is known for “woke” politics, as Ireland may follow in the footsteps of the United Kingdom and Canada politically.
