Members of “The Squad” disclosed that they collected as much as $50,000 in 2020 rent payments despite advocating to cancel rent. “The Squad” is a well-known group of four far-leftist women in Congress. Their members include Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Ayanna Pressley. The latter two women disclosed that they own rental properties and respectfully collect rental income in Detroit and Boston.
A 2020 bill that all “squad” members rallied behind would have legislated a pause on rent payments for as long as the “pandemic” continued. There is no specific timetable on an ending to the pandemic as of yet. The virus is with us and won’t go anywhere anytime soon. So this could be a thing that goes on forever. Landlords across the country were already hurt by the non-legislative “Eviction Moratorium” order by the CDC. That was allowed to expire in July and any extension of it would have required the legislation that all “squad” members support.
If “The Squad” got their way, then landlords would be in even worse trouble than they already faced in 2020 and much of 2021. The squad supports an interesting part of the “cancel rent” bill: the “buyout” option. If a landlord cannot continue to support his or her property without being paid, then he can sell the property to be free from the mounting costs. Federal money would be given to certain non-profits and other groups to facilitate these purchases. How many of these squad members have stakes in non-profits and/or community organizations? It is easy for them to say “cancel rent” while collecting rent, then selling their own properties back to themselves and renting them out again with higher-end tenants.
To call this situation liberal Democratic hypocrisy is kind of cliche at this point. This is typical of the left and it has been for a very long time. Hypocrisy and the Democratic Party go together like peanut butter and jelly. The problem is that large parts of their constituency have no idea what’s going on. They think that these obvious hypocrites are legitimate. Maybe a few more of these stories of blatant graft and dishonesty will wake a few sleeping people out of their slumber.
