UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says migrant deportation flights from the United Kingdom to the Central African nation of Rwanda will begin within 10 to 12 weeks. This is part of his campaign promise to “Stop The Boats.” Shabby dinghies and other floating people-movers full of migrants consistently attempt to take the perilous journey to the UK. This results in two less-than-desirable outcomes. The first is an onslaught of migrants that the UK cannot deal with properly. The second is a humanitarian crisis due to all the people who lose their lives in open water when these boats capsize and sink.
Sunak says this program will be a significant deterrent and that Rwanda is safe. Others have called this plan “inhumane” and “a gimmick” that is the opposite of humanitarian. Migrants in limbo who were interviewed say that they wouldn’t have come to the UK if they knew they’d be sent to Rwanda.
