BLM leaders in New York City are outraged at the charge of second-degree manslaughter in the Daniel Penny case being dropped. In 2023, 30-year-old Jordan Neely died after being placed into a “choke hold” by 24-year-old Daniel Penny. The altercation took place after Neely was behaving erratically on the train, endangering the safety of those around him and himself. Neely was well-known to local law enforcement as one of the top 10 homeless people who needed serious mental health treatment.
After the decision to drop the top charge in the case was announced, a BLM leader appeared on camera and alluded to riots and protests. The judge dropped the charge of manslaughter due to the jury being deadlocked in deliberation. The case, however, is not over yet. Penny still faces a charge of criminally negligent homicide. The manslaughter charge carried a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison while the lesser charge he is still facing carries a max penalty of 4 years. Public opinions are split on
