Duke University has doubled down on the racial incident that did not take place during the BYU women’s volleyball game. Back in late August of this year, a black female volleyball player from Duke alleged that a BYU fan shouted racial slurs at her every time she served. This incident blew up to the point where the young lady did an ESPN interview. South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley (also a former WNBA player) cancelled a game against BYU to stand in solidarity with the alleged victim of racism.
Brigham Young University (BYU) conducted a thorough investigation to get down to the bottom of the issue. They released a statement outlining the details of the investigation. Fifty witnesses were interviewed, audio and video evidence was reviewed, and the result was… nothing. No evidence of any racial incident was discovered. The fan who was initially banned for the racial incident was “un-banned” and given a formal apology. Duke University responded to the investigation with a statement. Their stance is that they stand with their student-athletes when their character is brought into question.
