Maryland resident and Mississippi native Laphonza Butler has replaced the deceased Dianne Feinstein as California Senator. The Democratic lobbyist was appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom and may be sworn in as early as Tuesday, October 3rd, 2023. She will serve out the rest of Feinstein’s term, which ends in 2024. California House Rep Adam Schiff is favored to win the seat in an official election. This appointment by Newsom fulfills a promise made a while back which was to fill any “vacant Senate seat” (an obvious reference to the then-failing Dianne Feinstein) with a black woman. A bonus with Butler is that she is also a lesbian married to a woman.
