Southwest Airlines decided to call the police on passengers stranded at a Nashville airport after their flights were canceled. The issue was over Southwest attempting to close the gate where would-be passengers were standing. The officer was instructed by Southwest to move the passengers to the ticket counter instead of the gate.
But the problem is that some of the passengers had valid tickets and they were in the correct area. The officer appeared sort of confused because his marching orders were to usher out “non-ticketed” passengers… but this status did not match everyone standing by the gate. It was a complete and total mess. Southwest is already embroiled in controversy over the ridiculous amount of cancelled flights over the holiday weekend.
Weather and demand for travel will most certainly cause chaotic travel conditions during every winter holiday. The problem with Southwest is that they refused to update their staffing technology which contributed to their extreme amount of cancellations.
Politicians have weighed in on the matter and may bring up the bailouts from a few years ago. The CEO of Southwest may be required to testify before Congress to explain this fiasco. The worst possible decision that could have been made was to call the police on passengers that were stranded due to Southwest’s own negligence.
