Trump Says He Takes Hydroxychloroquine; Media Freak Out!

After Donald Trump announced that he takes hydroxychloroquine as a preventative measure against the virus, the media went into a full-on meltdown. Neil Cavuto of Fox News warned that people in “risky” populations will die. Nancy Pelosi labeled Trump as “morbidly obese”. She then said that Trump is in the high-risk category of people who should not be taking this drug. CNN had a more measured, although still negative approach (surprisingly) by bringing two doctors on – including Sanjay Gupta.

Reaction to Trump’s statement from regular people and mainstream media alike was not unpredictable. Anything that the man says is taken out of context and blown up to be the worst. If Trump had a cure for cancer, these same individuals would complain if it was not 100% free. All of this may make for an entertaining Tuesday afternoon. But there are important things being obfuscated by all of the noise.

HCQ is Effective Against The Virus

Hydroxychloroquine has been proven to be effective against coronavirus. A study dating back to 2005 says as much. Let’s not forget, coronavirus does not simply refer to this new virus coming out of China. It refers to a family of viruses including the common cold, SARS, and MERS. So there has been plenty of time to research the effectiveness of the drug on other similar viruses. The drug has also been around since World War 2 and actively used in a variety of other applications. Lupus patients use it regularly as an anti-inflammatory. People in Africa use as malaria preventative. Hydroxychloroquine is also available as a cheap generic, costing just pennies per pill.

A study into hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) was done featuring elderly veterans in New York. The results were directly posted online without any type of peer review. Which is totally abnormal for cases like this. In the study, it showed that more veterans died of the virus who took HCQ than those that did not take it. The media rely heavily on this story without looking at any other previous studies that disprove their point of view. Furthermore, the New York veterans study was flawed. Not peer-reviewed and a bad pool of subjects. Guys that had one foot in the grave already and not much of an ability to fight back.

The World Is Watching And Taking Notes

The United States is not alone in the fight against the virus. In India, it is now common practice to prescribe hydroxychloroquine to patients. A similar thing is happening in Israel. Doctors from France to Sub-Saharan Africa all swear by the drug. So what’s the problem?

It’s hard to tell. Could be a money grab since Remdesivir is an expensive ($1,500 per session?) drug that is experimental and must be administered through IV. Some possible medical liabilities exist there but the profit margin could be through the roof. Not so much with HCQ.

The Game Is The Game

Then, of course, there are simply politics in the way. Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats, in general, would not like Trump to come up with a cure. They would rather Trump come up with it, they steal it, then take credit for it. With a record-breaking number of people unemployed, one would think that politics would take a back seat. But, of course, that’s not the case. The game is always the game no matter who is playing.
