Bernalillo County, New Mexico Sheriff John Allen announced that he will not be enforcing the Governor’s “unconstitutional” gun ban. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced a 30-day ban on open and concealed carry of guns in and around Albuquerque due to a recent surge in gun violence. This action was met with widespread criticism and protest. A large open-carry demonstration in Albuquerque happened after her announcement with no interruption by police.
A day or two after the pro-gun demonstration, Sheriff John Allen took questions at a press conference. He stated that criminals do not follow laws and such a rule preventing the carrying of guns would not help the issue of criminality in New Mexico. He also stated that the 30-day ban on carrying guns is unconstitutional and therefore unenforceable.
