Isaiah Lee, the 23-year-old who attacked Dave Chappelle at the Hollywood Bowl, may actually go to prison after all. Just a few days ago, it was reported that Lee will not face any prison or jail time for the attack on Chappelle. Beleaguered District Attorney George Gascon refused to prosecute Lee due to a review of the evidence failing to find a felony offense. The critical piece of evidence (or lack thereof) was the pocket knife which resembled a firearm that Isaiah Lee possessed. Since he did not actually use the knife during the Chappelle attack, a felony charge of “assault with a deadly weapon” cannot apply, therefore the attack is a misdemeanor. Since Los Angeles does not really prosecute misdemeanors with jail time, Lee was slated to be released with a slap on the wrist at best. However, the publicity surrounding the Hollywood Bowl incident has prompted a separate charge to be levied against Lee stemming from a December 2021 incident.
George Gascon admits that the publicity from the Dave Chappelle attack led to the attempted murder charges Isaiah Lee is now facing. Back in December 20201, Isaiah Lee was living at a “transitional housing” facility. Lee had a roommate and they got into some sort of squabble. The fight ended with Lee stabbing his roommate. It is not clear if Lee was arrested immediately after the incident or not. In any event, Lee’s roommate apparently felt compelled to identify him as his attacker after the Chappelle publicity. Since Lee is already in jail because of the Chappelle attack, he will probably be remanded or given another, higher bail amount due to the recent murder charge.
